In modern automotive technology, comfort and driving experience have long become key indicators of consumer concern. In addition to the power system and noise control, the suppression of engine vibration is also an important factor affecting the texture of the entire vehicle. Among the many vibration reduction devices, the seemingly inconspicuous "engine mounts" play a vital role in engine vibration control.

What are engine mounts?

The engine mount, also known as the engine bracket or engine suspension system, is an important structural component connecting the engine and the body. Its main function is to bear the weight of the engine, buffer the vibration generated by the engine during operation, and suppress the transmission of vibration to the cockpit and body. The engine mount must not only have a good load-bearing capacity, but also must have excellent shock-absorbing performance.

Sources of engine vibration

During the operation of the engine, periodic mechanical vibrations will be generated. These vibration sources include:

  • Inertial force caused by the reciprocating motion of the crankshaft and piston;

  • Impact caused by uneven combustion;

  • Torsional vibration caused by unbalanced components;

  • Vibration changes in engine start-up, idling and acceleration.

If these vibrations are transmitted directly to the car body without being processed, it will cause increased noise in the car, loose parts, and even affect driving safety.

The core role of engine mats

Buffering and absorbing vibrations

High-quality engine mats can effectively absorb high-frequency and low-frequency vibrations from the engine. Traditional rubber engine mats have a certain elasticity and are suitable for absorbing medium-frequency vibrations; while hydraulic engine mats have a stronger ability to absorb low-frequency and large-amplitude vibrations through liquid damping structures.

Stabilize the engine position

The engine mat fixes the position of the engine to prevent it from shifting and swaying during work, especially when accelerating sharply, turning or driving on bumpy roads, which can improve the stability of the power system.

Improve driving comfort

By suppressing the transmission of engine noise and vibration, engine mats play a key role in improving the NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) performance of the entire vehicle, allowing passengers to experience a smoother and quieter in-car environment.

Technology development trend: intelligence and active control

With the advancement of technology, modern cars are increasingly using active engine mats or electronically controlled suspension systems. This type of engine mat can automatically adjust the damping characteristics according to the engine working conditions. For example, it provides softer vibration absorption at idle speed and enhances support at high speed or intense maneuvering, thereby achieving a balance between comfort and maneuverability.

In addition, some high-end models are also equipped with "electronically controlled hydraulic engine mats" with sensors and control modules, which adjust the response parameters in real time through the ECU (electronic control unit) to further improve the vibration suppression effect.

Common manifestations of engine mat failure

As a rubber + metal structure, the engine mat is prone to aging, cracking, hydraulic leakage and other problems after long-term use. Common symptoms include:

  • Intensified body shaking at idle speed;

  • "Frustration" occurs when starting and shifting gears;

  • Increased engine shaking during driving;

  • Abnormal noise is transmitted from the engine compartment to the cab.

If the above phenomenon occurs, the engine mat should be checked and replaced in time to avoid further damage to the engine and body structure.

Summary

Although the engine mat is only a small component, it is the "shock absorber guard" in the engine vibration control system. It silently undertakes the important tasks of buffering, supporting and isolating, and plays an irreplaceable role in improving vehicle performance, extending vehicle life and ensuring ride comfort. In future car maintenance, car owners should also pay attention to the inspection and replacement of engine mats to make the engine run more smoothly and quietly.
