The VE pump is a single plunger rotary distributor pump. A vane type lift pump draws diesel from the tank, the plunger both pressurises and distributes the fuel to each injector line in firing order, and the mechanical governor and the timing device set the delivery quantity and injection advance against engine speed. Because delivery is set by internal shims and by the position of the control lever, a pump that has been opened without a test bench will usually deliver the wrong quantity at idle and at full load.
Every pump we ship is run on a calibration bench and set to the delivery map for the engine code listed above. If you are fitting a pump to an engine that has been rebuilt, tell us the engine code and the vehicle application when ordering so the delivery setting matches your engine rather than a generic one.
Set the engine to number one cylinder top dead centre on the compression stroke and line up the pump flange marks before the pump is fitted. Never turn the pump shaft with the delivery valves removed, and never crank the engine with a fuel line loose on the high pressure side.
Flush the fuel lines and fit a new fuel filter before the first start. Dirt or water reaching the plunger and the delivery valves is the most common reason a new pump fails early, and it also voids the warranty. Bleed the system at the filter and at the pump return before cranking for a long period.
The pump is drained, capped at the inlet, outlet and delivery ports, wrapped in foam and packed in a neutral carton. Lead time is 3-7 days for stock quantities. Warranty is 6 months against manufacturing defects and does not cover failures caused by contaminated fuel, a dry run, incorrect timing or a restricted fuel return.
